Tiny parts that multiply
Competition proposal
spring 2024 (2 weeks)
Finding space without use is precious, it belongs to the individual and is reimagined in their image. If they choose to share the space, the chance for individual discovery is lost. Actions that take place inside, leave fragments of use behind. Each new action is influenced by the last.
Slowly, the lingering fragments force the space into a specific use. If it becomes a program it is not something that can designed, it has to be discovered over time. These places are spatial relationships that cannot exist alone, they can only grow in an existing context. if the fragments of use could be removed, the chance for individual discovery would be renewed.
The tiny modules draw inspiration from nomadic cabin designs. It offers a space where one can reconnect with nature, simplicity and a slower version of life.
This proposes is a wooden structure can be configured through several modules, starting from 12.5 square meters and adding on until the desired space is achieved, The standard dimensions for a “one” module are 4 x 2,5 meters (with a sleeping loft). A prefabricated wood construction system allows the structure to be easily assembled, while giving flexibility on the interior spaces.
While no ground work is necessary, placing the structure on pillars may be recommended depending on the site conditions. The modules require no special foundation work and can be placed directly on the ground using minimal intervention.
The interior finishes utilize white washed wood panel, with the exterior wood panels impregnated to provide waterproofing but will weather ofver time and slowly turn grey.
The windows have various sizes and ideally consists of photovoltaic panels/glass. The inclusion of heating, water, electricity, and insulation in off-grid configurations depends on the inclusion of solar energy (or available on-site connections).
Given the compact size, the interior is minimalistic and sparse. It offers variations in layout to optimize the space. To live fully off-grid and have water, electricity, heat and waste disposal.
The space is an nomadic exploration of “Off-grid“. It is conceptualize here against the backdrop of an autumn forest in the west of sweden. It is ment to be placed anywhere you choose to enjoy the most beautiful places in the world.
The loft of the module doubles as workingspace and bedroom. After sleeping the bed is folded away and becomes a little sofa. A small working table is folded out of the wall and provides a working space for the day. An extra bench can be foldoed down next to it to provide shared experiences and create connection.
The smaller kitchen in the “one“ module has a dining table and to seats hidden in the row of cabinets. When needing all available floor space (for instance during preparation for dinner) the seating area is hidden away. After the bustle is done and it’s time to wind down and enjoy, the cabinate is folded up and the seats are pulled out of storage. Creating a cozy area for socializing.
The bathroom / shower window is made of frosted glass and gives a lot of light to the interior space while providing privacy from the outside.
