Second year bachelor project 2
winter 2013 (5 weeks)
Project.
Expansion of a part of KTH Architectural school., damaged by fire two years earlier. A few walls of the structure still stand, creating a provisional courtyard inside the school.
Design.
An open air exhibition hall. My proposal aims to use the remaining structure and ad elements. I wanted to experiment with light during this project. Using daylight to create dynamic spaces and see how they can influence a room.
Connecting a new roof to the old walls, at the same time stabilise them with my new structure. The existing construction follows an octagonal grid determined by the underlying pillar system, I'm using the same grid but rotating the angle of my structure by 45 degrees.
The supporting pillars mark slits in the roof where daylight shines through. Utilising the pillar as reflector for sunlight, I can illuminate the pillar and the area surrounding it. By rotating pillars slightly, the time of day when light shines down changes, This way I produce a transformation of space, influenced by the sun moving across the sky. The exhibition hall becomes a large open space with a subtle but dynamic light cycle during the course of a day.
